Where is my main water shutoff?
Common spots are where the water line enters the house (basement, crawlspace, garage or utility closet), near the water heater, or at the meter box near the street. Our guide on finding your water shutoff walks through each.
Should I turn off the gas myself?
Only if your gas company tells you to, and never if you smell gas. If you smell gas, leave right away and call 911 or the gas company from outside. Once a gas meter valve is off, only the utility or a qualified pro should turn it back on.
